Westlake Projects, From Patio to Apron

Westlake has grown in every census since 1950, and that steady growth shapes the work our concrete contractors do there. The city had 4,912 residents in 1950, 12,906 in 1960, 19,475 in 1980, 27,018 in 1990, 31,719 in 2000 and 34,228 in 2020. Housing units rose from 13,648 in 2000 to 15,508 in 2020. The result is a city of about 16 square miles with homes from nearly every decade since the 1960s, each with different concrete needs.

From Dover to Westlake

The area was first settled in 1810 as part of Dover Township. Dover Village was renamed Westlake in 1940 to avoid confusion with Dover, Ohio, and Westlake became a city in 1957. The Clague House Museum, built in 1876, preserves some of that early history. Most of what you see on residential streets today, though, is postwar and later.

What Westlake homeowners ask for

Stamped concrete patios. Owners of 1980s to 2000s homes often want to replace a small builder patio or aging deck with a larger, decorative space.

Driveway replacement. Homes from the 1960s and 1970s often have original drives that are cracked and settled. Newer homes sometimes need sections replaced where the slab dropped over backfill near the garage.

Front walks and steps. A wider walk, a new landing or a stamped border to dress up the entry.

Garage and shed slabs. For garage floor replacement and new outbuildings.

Designing a stamped patio

We start with how you will use the space: dining, a fire pit, a hot tub or just room for chairs. Then we mark the shape in your yard. Next we pick a pattern, such as ashlar slate, random stone or brick, and a two-tone color scheme, with a base color mixed into the concrete and a release color for depth. A contrasting border band frames the patio. After curing we seal it. Stamped concrete needs resealing every few years, and we tell you that up front so there are no surprises.

Driveways that last

Every Westlake driveway we pour gets a compacted stone base, reinforcement, air-entrained concrete, a broom finish and properly spaced control joints. Westlake sits at about 709 feet, and the official Cleveland snowfall normal is 63.8 inches a year. Freeze-thaw and salt are a fact of life, so we recommend sealing new drives before the first winter.

Repair before replace

When a single panel has sunk at the garage or the apron is broken but the rest of the drive is sound, we quote concrete repair and replacement for just that section. We tell you honestly whether a full replacement is worth it.

Crocker Park and newer neighborhoods

Crocker Park, a mixed-use center with about 650 residential units plus retail and offices, reflects how much of Westlake has been built or rebuilt in recent decades. Newer homes nearby usually have sound driveways but small patios, and owners ask us to expand outdoor space. Older neighborhoods closer to the city's original roads are more likely to need full driveway and step replacement. Either way, we design for drainage first and finish second.

Hot tub and fire pit pads

Westlake owners often ask for pads for a hot tub, fire pit or grill station. We size the thickness and reinforcement for the load and place the pad so it drains away from the house.

Two decades of new housing

Westlake added nearly 1,900 housing units between 2000 and 2020. On a home from that stretch, the original drive is usually still in decent shape, and the questions are more about adding: a wider apron, a side pad, or a patio bigger than the one the builder poured. Westlake Questions

How often does a stamped patio in Westlake need resealing?

Typically every two to three years, depending on sun and use. Resealing keeps the color rich and protects the surface from salt and stains.

Can you replace my deck with a stamped patio?

Yes. If the deck is raised, we can add steps or a landing to handle the change in height, then pour the patio at grade.

My newer home's driveway dropped near the garage. Do I need a whole new drive?

Usually not. We replace the settled section on a rebuilt, compacted base and tie it to the existing slab.
